Why Foam Replacement Matters

Vinyl usually outlasts the foam underneath it. Boat seat foam sits through direct sun, rain, and constant humidity, and once it starts absorbing water it stops supporting your weight the way it should. Flat, waterlogged foam adds dead weight to your seating and gives mold and mildew a place to grow, even when the vinyl on top still looks fine.

Replacing the foam on its own restores the original firmness and shape of your seats without the cost of buying completely new seats. We offer closed-cell  or dry-fast marine-grade foams that resist water absorption, so your seating stays lighter, drier, and more comfortable through every South Florida boating season.

Signs Your Boat Seating Needs New Foam

Cushions that stay heavy and damp long after the boat is out of the water are one of the clearest signs the foam inside has started to break down. Other signs include seats that feel flat or lumpy where they used to feel firm, a musty smell that lingers even after cleaning the vinyl, and visible mildew stains bleeding through seams or zippers.

Foam replacement is an optional yet highly recommended complementary service only available during our upholstery process, as it requires to strip away the vinyl to reveal the foam underneath. Catching worn foam early keeps mold from spreading further across the cushion, severely enhances vinyl longevity, and overall enhances your boating experience.

Foam Replacement VS Full Reupholstery

When boat seat foam goes flat, waterlogged, or moldy, you can usually choose between replacing just the foam or having the seat fully reupholstered.

Foam replacement on its own is often the faster, more affordable fix when the vinyl is still in good shape. Full reupholstery makes more sense when the vinyl is torn, faded, or you want to change the look of the seat while the foam is out.

Key Factor ⚖️ Foam Replacement 🧽 Full Reupholstery 🪡
💰 CostMore affordable when only the foam has failed and the existing vinyl is still in good conditionHigher cost since new vinyl, thread, and labor are added on top of any foam work
🪑 ComfortRestores original firmness and support right away, no more sinking or flatteningAlso restores comfort, and foam density or profile can be adjusted as part of a broader redesign
💧 Moisture & MoldRemoves waterlogged, mildew-holding foam and replaces it with closed-cell marine-grade foam that resists water absorptionFoam is inspected and replaced as needed during the reupholstery process
🎨 AppearanceKeeps the existing vinyl and color scheme unchanged since only the foam underneath is replacedGives the option to change vinyl color, pattern, or stitching along with the new foam
⏱️ TurnaroundOften faster since there is no need to cut and sew new vinyl panelsTakes longer due to pattern making, cutting, and sewing new upholstery
🌊 Best ForSeats with good vinyl but flat, waterlogged, or moldy foam underneathSeats with worn or damaged vinyl in addition to failing foam

Summary: Foam replacement is the faster, more affordable fix when the vinyl is still in good shape, while full reupholstery is the better choice when the vinyl also needs to be restored or redesigned.

Foam Replacement Pricing

Foam replacement is priced per square yard, based on how thick the foam in your cushions needs to be. Estimates are always free, and we confirm final pricing once your cushions are measured.

Foam Thickness Price Per Square Yard
1" Foam Replacement$80 per square yard
2" Foam Replacement$100 per square yard
3" Foam Replacement$125 per square yard
4" Foam Replacement$175 per square yard

How Square Yardage Is Calculated

Foam replacement is priced per cushion. To find the square yardage of a cushion, multiply its length in feet by its width in feet, then divide that number by 9.

Square yards = (length in feet × width in feet) ÷ 9

That result is then rounded up to the next whole square yard. Foam is bought by the square yard and cannot be purchased in partial yards, so covering any amount over a whole yard means buying the next full yard of foam. That full yard is what gets billed, which is why a cushion is never billed for less than 1 square yard even when its actual area is smaller.

Example 1: A 1" thick cushion measuring 3 ft by 1 ft is 3 square feet, which works out to 0.33 square yards. Because that rounds up to 1 square yard, it is billed as 1 square yard, for a total of $80.

Example 2: A 1" thick cushion measuring 1.1 square yards still needs 2 full yards of foam to cover it, because the extra 0.1 cannot be bought on its own. It is billed for 2 square yards, not 1.1, for a total of 2 × $80 = $160.
